My wife and I went out last night, and I can’t help but notice she used the phrase, “my next car” about three times during dinner. So I foolishly asked her to expand on this unexpected theme.

I told her how, in the now 13 years I’ve known her, she has had zero zip zilch interest in cars so what’s the haps? She replied me that now that she’s rode in the Lexus - and especially that loaner RX - she wants a nice car too. She mentioned luxurious seats... No, HEATED seats. I don’t even have heated seats in mine!

“And more room for a second dog!”

Second what?!?!?!

Kinja'd!!!

“But what about the Vibe that you said you loved?”

“I do love it! I guess I can last maybe two more years in it.”

I don’t think there are any mixed signals here.

Well anyway, guess I’ll be shopping for an older Lexus RX soon.

2nd gens are good too. Just make sure it’s either the RX330 or a 2009 RX350. The firs year or two on the 3.5L can be a bit sketchy.

I don’t know why they all hate wagons. The lobbying against them is far too strong, I guess. The fact they like SUVs is even more baffling. I can see some disdain for minivans since they were a thing that our parents drove when we were kids and have a bit of a negative stigma, but SUVs have the same mom car stigma yet they still want them. Baffling. The funny thing is that anyone under about 30 was probably driven around in SUVs as a child, so they should feel the same negativity toward them as they do minivans. The funny thing is that while I don’t want to drive a minivan, I love riding in them. I have so many great memories of the wonderful experience of riding in the back of them, with their deeply tinted windows, your vent own vent, your own cup holder, a ledge for your CD player, some room to sprawl, and a nice smooth ride that didn’t cause your CD to skip (which was a problem in the Exploders of the era).

Wagons are a solid generation removed from us. Unless our parents were at least upper-middle class or immigrants, there’s a very low probability that they ever drove us around in a wagon as children. Our parents would remember them from the 50s-70s/80s, though.

Poorer young single moms love minivans... My wife’s schoolmate with like a 2-3 year old just expounded about how amazingly wonderful they are, but my wife and her other friend are still obsessed with SUVs and can’t get past it.

I know a couple of women in their late 20s who like wagons. One has a new Civic hatch and the other has a Compass that she hates and wants to trade in for something smaller and less awful. Both like the TSX wagon.

I just don’t get it. She wants more space, but most crossovers have less cargo capacity that our Vibe. There is zero need for AWD for us, and we our driveway is barely wide enough for her car. So why more bigly makes anti-bigly sense to me.

That said: as they old saying goes, “you like what you like.”

DID SOMEONE SAY RX? I can’t recommend the 2nd gen enough. My dad and I have a combined 366,000 miles on ours and mine’s just about to cross 236k. Mine’s had a few issues being an early built ‘04 and the gas mileage isn’t great, but I still love it. It’s not fun to drive, but man is it enjoyable. And it’s so well built, unsurprisingly. Even after 236k, it only has rattles when it’s cold!

I don’t know any around here that didn’t grow up rich (wealthy people love wagons still, but I think that’s partially because they’ve experienced them in Europe and can afford European cars that still come in wagon body styles).

The thing I don’t get with my wife’s obsession is that she wants something that handles at least as well as her Mazda3, but that is also faster and has an excellent safety rating. That’s hard to come by in SUVs, especially in a decent price range. I’ve pointed out that really the only options that tick all her boxes are cars and wagons.

My wife’s cars have been a late 90s Camry, mid 2000s CR-V, 2017 pilot. But she loved going autocrossing with me as a ride along, made me promise to get a future fun car when I went for a boring safe kids commuter, and loves our 230k miles Craigslist Tundra. Crossover driver and supportive enthusiast can coexist in one person.

My wife’s the same. She drove an Odyssey for 10 years and it worked great for us. But, now it’s an SUV or nothing. I try to sell her on the virtues of wagons and hatches, but she counters with: “I don’t tell you what to drive”.

Her Enclave is very nice. It even has air conditioned seats.

Yeah, we’ve got rookie numbers compared to that! I’d love to get my RX to 300k, but I don’t drive a ton while I’m at school so I have a feeling rust’ll get to it before it hits that, unfortunately.

The grey one is mine and I absolutely love the color! The metallic flake in it is awesome. Lexus really does a fantastic metallic grey, as you know with your IS-F too!

That’s ridiculous! That’s so impressive for Toyota’s first application of the V6 hybrid combo and first hybrid system after the Prius, if I’m not mistaken. I doubt even Toyota would’ve expected it’d last that long!

Get the generation with a cartridge filter. It is tricky to remove the spin on without spilling.
